Reduce image size in Word and Google Docs
Large photographs can make a document slow to share or inconvenient to email. This tool reduces the weight of supported embedded images inside a DOCX, then creates a new copy of the document. Import a Google Docs link or upload a Microsoft Word DOCX from your computer. Your original file remains available and is not overwritten.
Choose the image quality and maximum dimensions before generating the smaller document. Lower quality or smaller dimensions can reduce file size more, but also remove detail. Start with a moderate setting for reports and drafts. Use a higher setting when fine labels, diagrams or print quality are important, and inspect the result before replacing your working copy.
Example size reduction
Our bundled example was reduced from 7.3 MB to 277 KB using 80% quality and a 1600 px limit. This is a sample result, not a promised saving for every document. The results panel compares your original and output file sizes. A file containing already small or heavily compressed images may change very little.
Continue editing in Word or Google Docs
Open the compressed DOCX directly in Microsoft Word. To use it in Google Docs, upload it to Google Drive and choose Open with Google Docs. The downloaded file is a separate copy, so verify its pictures, captions and formatting before using it in place of the original. Unsupported image formats may remain unchanged. Raster image compression cannot reduce a document whose size comes mainly from text or other embedded content.
Questions & answers
Does this edit my original document?
No. The tool creates a downloadable DOCX. You decide whether to open that copy in Microsoft Word or Google Docs and use it for further work.
Will all images be compressed?
Supported images are processed according to the selected settings. Unsupported media can be retained unchanged, and images that cannot benefit may contribute little to the saving.
Can I keep the original image files?
Yes. Save the original DOCX or use Download images before compressing. Lossy compression removes detail, so the reduced document is not a substitute for your source assets.
Are local uploads processed in the browser?
Yes. The compression work runs in your browser. Importing from a public link involves a download through the service, while private links use Google authorization before processing.
