Add consistent captions to figures and tables
Give the images and tables in a document clear labels before sharing a report or academic draft. Import a Google Docs link or upload a Microsoft Word DOCX to inspect the items available for captioning. Choose which items to include, write the caption text and generate a new Word document with consistent numbering.
Figures and tables use separate sequences, such as Figure 1 and Table 1. You can adjust the label prefixes and include lists of figures and tables. Captions help a reader refer to an illustration without relying on a vague description such as the picture above. The tool does not invent research descriptions or decide which items deserve a caption.
Example captioned document
A report with two photographs and one data table can receive Figure 1 — Field observations, Figure 2 — Sampling location and Table 1 — Summary of results. The optional lists collect the figure and table labels in the same document. Preview the item list and your wording before creating the DOCX, then inspect the downloaded copy for spacing and page breaks.
Static numbering in Word and Google Docs
The labels are static text, not Word field codes, live Google Docs fields or automatic cross-references. Re-run the tool after adding, deleting or moving images and tables that change the sequence. Open the result in Microsoft Word, or upload the downloaded DOCX to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs. The tool writes a separate output file and does not update your original Word file or Google Doc directly.
Questions & answers
Can I caption tables as well as images?
Yes. Tables have their own label prefix and numbering sequence. Select the table entries you want to include and provide a useful description for each one.
Does numbering update automatically?
No. Re-run here after you add or move images and tables. Check any references elsewhere in your text because they are not automatically linked to the generated captions.
Can I generate a list of illustrations?
Yes. Enable the lists option to add a list of figures and a separate list of tables for the selected items. These lists are also static.
Will repeated processing duplicate captions?
The tool recognizes captions it generated when that metadata is retained. If another editor rewrites or removes the identifying structure, review the item list and output carefully before sharing.
